Course Description
The French Language Arts in Immersion consists of four main areas of study called strands:
· French language and cultural diversity
· Listening and Speaking
· Reading and Viewing
· Writing and Representing.
Within these four strands are numerous specific learning outcomes. At the entry level to secondary school most of these outcomes are considered introductory and are in process of acquisition. They are continued and expected to be mastered in grade 9.
Concepts Covered:
The course will be structured around READING and WRITING workshops, four days of the week. Each workshop will begin with a mini-lesson during which time either a new concept or one that has already been taught will be presented. Students will then use this concept as their focus and apply it during their independent work time. Within the workshops we will work on reading (newspapers, short stories, novels, cultural elements, blogs and articles), writing (informative texts, essays, short stories, journals, and dialogues). On the fifth day we will be working on listening and speaking skills, during which time we will also tie in French CULTURE and LANGUAGE activities. SPEAKING and LISTENING activities will include: oral interaction, presentations, and drama activities as well as language structures (verbs, vocabulary, expressions, etc.) and will be incorporated throughout.
Expectations and Evaluation
Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning and are encouraged to be involved, active learners in and out of the classroom. The following assessment pieces will be used to provide students with multiple opportunities to demonstrate that they have met the outcomes for this course: student-teacher conferences, reading log, writing journal, assignments, presentations, projects, class work, and class participation. Summative grades for report cards will be determined by using a combination of these assessments throughout each term. Students are expected to speak French at all times.
When and if homework is given, it is done so under the Provincial Homework Guideline to enhance student learning. Homework has three purposes: to prepare students for future learning, to practice new knowledge or new skills and to enrich students’ understanding of a topic.
